On May 28, Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a significant announcement regarding the revocation of visas for Chinese students. The State Department will target those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or those studying in critical fields.
Rubio highlighted concerns over how the CCP has taken advantage of vulnerabilities within American civil society to fulfill strategic goals. These activities have included surveillance, sabotage, unfair trading practices, and flooding the country with fentanyl. Additionally, there are concerns about interference in domestic politics and the theft of intellectual property valued at hundreds of billions of dollars.
Chinese students, particularly those in STEM research programs at universities across the United States, have been identified as a primary vector for these activities.
