Last week, President Trump announced a third deferment of a federal law banning TikTok. This decision comes despite the absence of provisions granting the president authority to defer more than once. Jeffrey Westling, Director of Technology and Innovation Policy, offers insights into the potential harms caused by this decision for TikTok, its hosting companies, and American consumers. He also highlights concerns about government censorship.

Westling states: “Congress should take action. It should either repeal the law, making it legal for TikTok to continue its operation in the United States, or hold the Trump Administration accountable for the lack of enforcement.” He adds that currently “TikTok exists in a regulatory purgatory,” which negatively impacts American consumers and businesses.
