Jessica Graham, a law student from Queens University Belfast, joined Susan Davis International (SDI) as an intern in June 2025 through the Washington Ireland Program. The program is designed to develop leadership and peace-building skills among university students from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland by providing internships and training opportunities in Washington D.C.

During her time at SDI, Graham supported various clients and took part in activities such as VIP speaker sessions, service visits, debates, and writing a policy paper on climate change and sustainability. She applied her research and writing abilities to projects like the Marine Corp Heritage Foundation’s Marines Across America initiative for the Marines’ 250th anniversary. Her work included preparing biographies for the Marine250.com website to help raise public awareness about Marines’ contributions within their communities.

Reflecting on her experience at SDI, Graham said: “One of the most rewarding parts of my work with SDI has been researching Marine Corps veterans for MCHF as they celebrate the Marines’ 250th anniversary. Learning about how these individuals continue to serve their communities long after their military service is truly inspiring. Whether it’s through mentorship, advocacy, or community leadership, their dedication to making a difference doesn’t end when their uniform comes off. Being part of a project that honors their stories and highlights their ongoing impact has been both humbling and motivating.”

Graham also discussed how public relations may evolve over the next decade: “In the next decade, AI will play a major role in transforming public relations, from how we analyze public sentiment to how we tailor and deliver messages in real time. Tools powered by machine learning will allow PR professionals to predict trends, personalize outreach, and respond to crises with unprecedented speed and precision.

At the same time, communication itself is evolving. With younger generations increasingly consuming information through short-form content on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, the demand for concise, visually engaging messaging will only grow. PR will have to adapt by delivering impactful stories in shorter, more creative formats without losing authenticity or nuance. The challenge will be to cut through the noise while still building trust and connection in an age of fast-moving, bite-sized communication.”

She named Portmuck beach as her favorite place due to its personal significance growing up in Belfast. Graham also cited “Normal People” by Sally Rooney as her top book choice of the past year because of its portrayal of Irish youth culture.

When asked who inspires her most, she responded: “It may sound cliché, but my biggest inspiration is my mother. Coming from a working-class background, she’s always reminded me that I’m capable of achieving anything I set my mind to. Her incredible work ethic of juggling two jobs, caring for my grandparents with dementia, and supporting our family has shown me what strength and resilience truly look like. She’s taught me the importance of kindness, integrity, and treating people with respect. I like to think I inherited her great sense of style too – though I’m less thrilled when she ‘borrows’ my shoes without asking!”

Graham expressed interest in visiting Italy next due to its culture and cuisine.

The Washington Ireland Program continues its mission by bringing students like Graham into professional environments where they can gain practical experience while contributing meaningfully during their internships.
