The Heritage Foundation has expressed approval of the recent Supreme Court decision in the case of Catholic Charities Bureau v. Wisconsin Labor & Industry Review Commission. The court ruled unanimously against Wisconsin’s attempt to deny a tax exemption to a Christian nonprofit organization.

Jack Fitzhenry, a legal fellow at the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, commented on the decision: “It is heartening to see that the Supreme Court swiftly and unanimously rejected Wisconsin’s weak justifications for the state’s effort to deprive religious charitable works of their religious character—an effort that clearly discriminated against faiths. Lower courts must take note that First Amendment rights of religion cannot be so easily undercut by hostile state actors.”

The Heritage Foundation, known for its longstanding defense of religious freedom, maintains that this right extends beyond mere worship in places like synagogues, churches, or mosques. According to Heritage, religious freedom encompasses living, speaking, and acting according to one’s beliefs without being compelled by culture or government to compromise core values.
