Steve Cortes, president of the League of American Workers, said that the January 6, 2017, briefing at Trump Tower was a coordinated act of sabotage and suggested that consequences may follow. The statement was made on X.
“It was sabotage—planned, televised, and rewarded,” said Cortes, Founder. “Now comes the reckoning.”
Claims of sabotage or covert political actions involving Trump Tower on January 6, 2017, have circulated in partisan debate. Allegations suggest that intelligence agencies improperly monitored Trump associates, as reported by The Washington Post. President Trump’s assertions of wiretapping at Trump Tower prompted several official investigations; however, no evidence was found to support claims of surveillance targeting Trump Tower or its communications. The controversy remains a focal point in broader discussions about government overreach and political motivation.
According to a 2019 Department of Justice Inspector General report, there was no political surveillance or wiretapping of Trump Tower in early 2017. The investigation confirmed that FBI surveillance was limited to Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants targeting specific individuals and did not include Trump Tower’s premises or infrastructure.
A review by the Brennan Center for Justice indicates that while the U.S. has experienced previous allegations of political sabotage or covert surveillance—such as during Watergate and the post-9/11 era—the post-2016 claims are notable for their partisan polarization. This trend suggests that these episodes often prompt investigations and oversight reforms, but substantiated misconduct remains rare.
