Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) has been a topic of debate among political advocates and critics. This voting system allows voters to rank candidates by preference, a method that has garnered attention from both left and right-leaning individuals who consider it a potential model for elections.
Recently, the RCV system was spotlighted in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary. Candidate Zohran Mamdani, an advocate of RCV, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo. The outcome led some to speculate that Mamdani’s victory was aided by the RCV system, as progressive groups urged supporters not to rank Cuomo before the election. Others argue that Cuomo could have performed better if he had utilized the ranking system more effectively.
Jason Snead, executive director of the Honest Elections Project, discusses this controversial voting method and its implications in New York on “Ep. 371: Gaming the Vote: The Truth About Ranked Choice Voting,” available on Spreaker.
The Wall Street Journal reported on New York progressives’ strategy titled ‘Don’t Rank Cuomo,’ while the Capital Research Center highlighted left-wing megadonors’ support for RCV and explained how it functions.
