Japan has agreed to provide partial funding for a U.S. nuclear project as part of a broader investment plan totaling $550 billion in the United States. The agreement involves Japan contributing to a project valued between $80 and $100 billion, which will see Westinghouse construct nuclear reactors and make other related investments.
Japan possesses significant expertise in manufacturing nuclear reactor components that require heavy forging, an area where the United States currently lacks capacity. This capability positions Japan as a key partner in the U.S. nuclear energy sector.
In 2024, the United States imported about $1.4 million worth of nuclear reactor parts from Japan, representing nearly 20 percent of its total imports of such parts.
Shuting Pomerleau and Jacob Jensen have released an analysis summarizing the current state of the nuclear energy industry and evaluating the trade relationship between the two countries.
