The Heritage Foundation has recognized the recent ceasefire agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which was brokered by the United States. The deal, signed with the involvement of President Trump, President Aliyev of Azerbaijan, and Prime Minister Pashinyan of Armenia, formally ends ongoing hostilities that have persisted since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. These conflicts have resulted in thousands of casualties over several decades.

Victoria Coates, vice president of the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation, commented on the significance of this development:

“President Trump is making conflict resolution the cornerstone of his second term national security policy. Building on the tremendous and enduring success of the Abraham Accords at the end of his first term, these agreements reflect a pattern: a testimony to the success of the President’s policy of peace through strength. This deal is a reminder that strong American leadership can end wars and sends a signal to aggressors everywhere that peace is possible when the United States leads. I commend the accomplishments of U.S. Special Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff and his negotiating team, led by Aryeh Lightstone. The opportunities created by this deal are enormous, especially the possibility that additional countries may join the Abraham Accords.”

This latest ceasefire represents President Trump’s fourth peace agreement since returning to office in January. Other recent diplomatic efforts facilitated by his administration include negotiations leading to peace between India and Pakistan, Thailand and Cambodia, as well as between Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

Robert Greenway, director of the Allison Center for National Security at Heritage, stated:

“Today, we witnessed yet another historic peace agreement from the consummate deal maker President Trump and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Not only does this deal bring an end to decades of bloodshed, but it protects an ancient Christian community, secures a vital regional ally in a strategic location, safeguards critical energy supplies, diminishes Russian influence, and provides significant economic benefits for the United States. The world is in better standing today because the Trump administration pursued peace.”

The Heritage Foundation indicated its ongoing commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at creating a more peaceful and secure future for America and its allies.
