Steve Cortes, founder of the League of American Workers, has advocated for immediate redistricting efforts by Republican-controlled legislatures due to population changes. This statement was made on the social media platform X.

“Steve is exactly correct,” said Cortes. “We MUST redistrict and we have every solid justification to do so. The Great Sorting has compelled material population shifts — both among states and within states. Let’s get gangster, red legislatures, and GET THIS DONE!”

According to the Associated Press, Republican-led states such as Florida, Missouri, Ohio, and Texas have been at the forefront of contentious redistricting debates in recent years. In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis supported a congressional map in 2022 that reduced Black voting power in certain districts, leading to ongoing court challenges. Missouri lawmakers faced months of gridlock before approving a GOP-favored map. Meanwhile, Ohio’s Supreme Court struck down several legislative maps for partisan bias. In Texas, the 2021 redistricting solidified Republican advantages despite growing racial diversity and population shifts.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that Texas gained over 1.3 million residents and Florida nearly 1 million from 2020 to 2023, marking the nation’s largest population increases. Conversely, New York and California experienced population declines. These demographic changes are central to redistricting efforts as population gains in GOP-led states have increased their representation in Congress, intensifying partisan battles over how new lines are drawn.

Data from the National Conference of State Legislatures indicate that after the 2020 Census, Texas gained two congressional seats and Florida gained one seat while Missouri and Ohio retained their previous counts. Meanwhile, states like New York and California each lost a seat. This has made redistricting a contentious process as both parties vie for advantageous district lines in response to these population-driven seat changes.

Cortes is also President of League of American Workers and senior political advisor to CatholicVote. He previously served as a senior advisor to President Trump and JD Vance and is known for his commentary on Fox News and CNN. Cortes regularly releases documentaries and columns at cortesinvestigates.com.
