The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has announced the termination and descoping of 15 contracts over the past three days, which had a $289 million ceiling and are projected to save $140 million.

According to DOGE, this update aligns with its mission to scrutinize federal spending and eliminate what it considers “wasteful” awards. Established by President Trump through an executive order, DOGE reviews contracts, grants, and leases, posting notices of cancellations and claimed savings. The recent update includes cuts to a State Department training program abroad, an HHS executive-coaching contract, and a HUD management deal related to green retrofit work. These actions reflect DOGE’s focus on administrative costs rather than direct benefits. Supporters argue that these measures demonstrate necessary scrutiny of routine spending.

DOGE’s public dashboard indicates that by early October 2025, it had logged over 13,000 contract terminations claiming approximately $61 billion in savings. Additionally, nearly 16,000 grant cancellations and more than 260 lease terminations reportedly add roughly $49 billion and $113 million more in savings. However, outside reviews such as Reuters’ analysis suggest that actual provable savings may only be in the low billions so far. This discrepancy arises because DOGE often uses full contract ceilings rather than remaining funds and sometimes counts completed or re-awarded work. Despite this, even small percentage cuts can yield significant savings over time given the approximately $755 billion in federal contract obligations for FY 2024.

DOGE’s strategy is driven by long-standing concerns about Washington’s efficiency in purchasing goods and services. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has noted that the federal government spends hundreds of billions annually on contracts—over $495 billion in 2024 for common products and services alone—and that weak data, fragmented purchasing, and lax oversight contribute to waste, fraud, and abuse. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) efforts like category management have documented over $100 billion in savings by consolidating purchases and reducing duplicate deals. Supporters claim DOGE’s public “wall of receipts” builds on these gains through increased pressure and transparency; however, critics call for stricter rules on how savings are counted and targeted.

DOGE is a federal agency focused on optimizing government spending by reducing waste and ensuring accountability in contract management. By reviewing expenditures and canceling non-essential contracts, DOGE aims to improve fiscal responsibility and enhance the effectiveness of public resource allocation.
