Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is encouraged by Human Rights Watch to prioritize human rights and accountability during Denmark’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union. This leadership role, from July to December 2025, comes at a critical time for EU values amidst challenges such as democratic backsliding within the bloc and ongoing crises at Europe’s borders.
Måns Molander, Nordic director at Human Rights Watch, emphasized Denmark’s potential to demonstrate principled leadership. “Denmark has a real opportunity to show principled leadership at a time when some EU governments are undermining fundamental rights and democratic safeguards,” Molander stated. He added that this presidency should focus on concrete actions to uphold the rule of law and protect rights both in Europe and globally.
Human Rights Watch called on Denmark to address Hungary’s systemic rule-of-law violations and assist in advancing article 7 proceedings against Hungary. The organization also urged Denmark to advocate for an EU migration policy that respects rights, support corporate accountability measures, and promote justice for serious international crimes in Ukraine and Gaza.
Molander further highlighted the importance of decisive action by stating, “EU credibility as a defender of rights depends on leaders willing to act when those rights are under threat. Denmark should lead by example.”
