The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) has announced its support for the Student Compensation and Opportunity through Rights and Endorsements (SCORE) Act. The bill, sponsored by Representative Gus Bilirakis of Florida, aims to allow college athletes to earn money from their name, image, and likeness. It also enables them to hire sports agents without being considered employees of their educational institutions.
The SCORE Act proposes granting the NCAA a limited exemption from antitrust laws and prohibits colleges from classifying student athletes as employees. A vote on this legislation is expected in the House later this week.
Sean Higgins, a research fellow at CEI, commented on H.R. 4312: “The Student Compensation and Opportunity through Rights and Endorsements (SCORE) Act is common sense legislation that protects the rights of individual college athletes by securing their right to fair representation through an agent and granting them control over how their name and likeness is used. The legislation reflects the reality of collegiate sports as it exists and gives athletes the right to profit off their own excellence. The Competitive Enterprise Institute endorses the SCORE Act.”
Earlier this week, CEI joined other organizations in signing a letter sent to Congress in support of the SCORE Act, an action reported by Fox News.
