After a period of heightened illegal border crossings, Southern California has seen a sharp decline in unauthorized entries. According to data from Border Patrol, the San Diego Sector recorded 895 encounters with individuals attempting to cross the border illegally in June 2025. This marks a significant reduction compared to June 2024, when there were 25,612 such encounters. The decrease amounts to a reported 97 percent drop over the course of one year.
Alongside fewer border crossings, authorities have increased deportations in Southern California. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently arrested and removed several individuals convicted or charged with serious crimes. Among those apprehended were Xou Yang, who was convicted of first-degree murder; Seath Champi, convicted of child abuse and driving under the influence; Marcario Tapia-Hernandez, charged with possession of child pornography; and Junior Daniel Calderon Guiterrez, identified as an active member of the Tren de Aragua gang.
Officials state that these efforts are part of broader enforcement actions following changes in federal border policy.
