A report from the D.C. Policy Center, highlighted by the Washington Informer on May 14, 2025, brings attention to soil contamination issues in Washington, D.C. Beyond industrial, agricultural, and waste pollutants, leaking underground storage tanks (LUSTs) are identified as a significant concern.
Efforts to address these threats have been ongoing since 1987. Despite these remediation efforts, data from 2020 indicates that 130 LUST sites remain active in the district. These sites continue to pose risks to both environmental and public health.
The issue of soil contamination is complex and requires continued vigilance and action to mitigate its impact on the community.
