Shanel Robinson, a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in New Jersey’s 12th district, has pledged to support congressional term limits, according to U.S. Term Limits (USTL), an organization that advocates for limiting terms for elected officials. Kyle Little, another candidate, has also signed the pledge.

Philip Blumel, president of USTL, commented on the recent pledges: “Shanel’s and Kyle’s strong support of term limits shows that there are individuals who are willing to put self-interest aside to follow the will of the people. America needs a Congress that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians.”

The pledge asks candidates to commit to cosponsoring and voting for an amendment that would limit members of the House to three two-year terms and senators to two six-year terms.

Blumel noted an increase in public support for term limits: “We have seen a dramatic increase in supporters wanting term limits on Congress. More than 87% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through congressional term limits.”

A nationwide poll by Pew Research found broad bipartisan backing for congressional term limits. According to Pew’s analysis: “An overwhelming majority of adults (87%) favor limiting the number of terms that members of Congress are allowed to serve. This includes a majority 56% who strongly favor this proposal, just 12% are opposed.”

Blumel concluded: “America is in trouble. Our career politicians have let the people down. It is time to return control of our nation to the people. It is time for a constitutional amendment limiting congressional terms.”

To amend the Constitution with these proposed term limits would require approval from two-thirds majorities in both chambers of Congress and ratification by 38 states.

U.S. Term Limits describes itself as a nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated solely to advancing congressional term limits through institutional change rather than individual self-limitation.
