Despite earlier indications of support, Senator Blackburn withdrew her backing for a provision in the Senate’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ late Monday night. The bill initially included a moratorium on AI development, which was removed in a 99-1 Senate vote.

Blackburn expressed concerns about the implications of the provision, stating, “This provision could allow Big Tech to continue to exploit kids, creators, and conservatives,” as reported by The New York Times.

The compromise involving Senators Blackburn and Cruz was seen as a significant step towards addressing inconsistencies in AI-related legislation across the United States. Adam Thierer from the R Street Institute described it as “a much-needed measure that will help America address the growing patchwork of over 1,000 AI-related laws popping up across the nation.”
