Over recent years, the term “lawfare” has gained recognition as a strategy where the legal system is used to achieve political objectives, regardless of the merits of the case. Environmental groups have been noted for employing this tactic aggressively. However, questions arise about who funds litigation that challenges energy companies’ operations. The U.S. Senate suspects that the People’s Republic of China might be involved in such funding.
