The R Street Institute has expressed concern over the potential adoption of online safety laws in the United States similar to Britain’s Online Safety Act. Shoshana Weissmann, Digital Director and Fellow at the organization, stated, “In the age of constant cyberattacks and privacy threats, the government shouldn’t be looking to make the situation worse.”

Weissmann emphasized that politicians may only reconsider such legislation if presented with clear evidence showing that age-verification laws are ineffective and can result in increased risks such as data breaches, identity theft, and public dissatisfaction. “[They’re] only going to be convinced when they see the negative effects more broadly,” she said.

The comments come amid ongoing debates about internet regulation and user privacy.
