The R Street Institute released a statement on Mar. 5 addressing recent events that have unsettled American political and civic life, including an immigration crackdown in Minneapolis resulting in deaths and arrests, deteriorating public discourse, violence against lawmakers, and controversial proposals from the White House.

The organization said these incidents highlight deeper challenges to the core principles of democratic liberalism such as individual liberty, constitutionally limited government, equality under the law, and a free and open society. The statement emphasized that these values are essential for self-government and must be protected even during times of crisis.

According to the R Street Institute, “These are not simply talking points; rather, they are the first principles of American democracy, and they require unflinching protection.” The group argued that while rapid changes in technology, communication, politics, and culture are reshaping society, adaptation should not mean abandoning foundational values.

The statement noted that Americans may feel exhausted by constant crises but warned against sacrificing fundamental tenets for short-term solutions. “A constitutional framework doesn’t constrain progress; it enables our republic to evolve and thrive,” the release said.

The R Street Institute concluded by urging leaders to recommit to foundational values rather than experiment with first principles. “These principles are not preferences to be traded away when politically convenient. They are the only thing standing between us and chaos,” the statement said.
