Puerto Rico is set to receive $8.3 million in federal funds aimed at wildlife conservation, fisheries restoration, and education for hunters and fishers. The announcement was made by Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández.
“This allocation strengthens Puerto Rico’s ability to protect our natural resources, support responsible fishing and hunting, and expand community access to outdoor recreation spaces. These are federal funds that come directly to the territory and should translate into concrete benefits for the Island,” said Hernández.
The funding includes $3.9 million from the Wildlife Restoration and Hunter Education program and $4.4 million from the Sport Fish Restoration program. These resources are part of a national distribution by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which is allocating over $1.2 billion across states and territories this year. The money comes from federal excise taxes paid by manufacturers of ammunition, firearms, fishing equipment, and other outdoor recreation gear.
Since their inception, these programs have provided more than $31 billion nationwide for conservation efforts, environmental education initiatives, and increased access to recreational activities throughout the United States and its territories.
