Steve Cortes, president of the League of American Workers, has said that increased wind energy use leads to higher power bills. He referenced a chart from the Wall Street Journal during his appearance in the documentary “Blown Away.”

“The more we rely on wind power, the more expensive the electricity,” said Cortes. “Do you think I exaggerate? Have a look at this chart from the Wall Street Journal.”

Wind energy’s impact on U.S. electricity prices continues to be a topic of debate among experts and policymakers. According to the Houston Chronicle, critics like Cortes claim that wind energy raises consumer costs and undermines grid reliability. However, analysts argue that wind energy lowers prices by reducing reliance on fuel-based generation, especially during periods of high gas prices. In Texas, wind and solar reportedly saved ratepayers $11 billion in 2022, highlighting wind’s potential to cut electricity costs.

In 2024, wholesale electricity prices across the U.S. declined and became less volatile compared to the previous year. As reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), this was largely due to lower natural gas prices, increased renewable generation, and expanded battery storage. Regions with high wind energy usage benefited from these conditions through enhanced supply stability and lower peak costs.

Electricity prices differ between states that rely heavily on wind power and those dependent on fossil fuels. According to the EIA, states like Texas—where wind power plays a major role—often report lower average electricity rates due to low marginal generation costs. In contrast, fossil fuel-dependent states experience more price volatility tied to fluctuating fuel markets, demonstrating how energy source choice affects affordability.

Cortes is a political strategist and media commentator with a background in finance, having previously worked as a trader and market analyst. According to the Executive Speakers Bureau, he advised Donald Trump’s presidential campaigns and frequently appears on Fox News and Newsmax. He currently leads the League of American Workers and recently produced a film titled “Blown Away,” criticizing wind energy’s cost and reliability.

The League of American Workers is a conservative advocacy group founded in 2022 by Cortes to promote the interests of working-class Americans. As described on its official website, the organization advocates for wage growth, tighter immigration policies, and skepticism of government subsidies for green energy. It portrays itself as a voice for blue-collar workers disillusioned with both major parties and corporate elites.
