Steve Cortes, President of the League of American Workers, said that Ed Martin is a principled legal advocate capable of bringing accountability and justice through the Department of Justice. This statement was made on X.

“Terrific news,” said Cortes. “Ed Martin is exactly the kind of sharp, principled legal warrior that America needs to bring accountability. and real justice flowing out of the Trump DOJ.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi established the Weaponization Working Group on February 5, 2025. The group was created to examine prosecutions considered politically motivated, specifically those targeting former President Donald Trump. According to ABC News, Bondi’s directive instructed the group to review investigative actions against Trump by both state and federal authorities. This initiative was framed as an effort to combat partisan law enforcement and realign Department of Justice (DOJ) priorities. The group was formed within the Office of the Attorney General immediately after Bondi assumed her role.

Edward R. Martin Jr. was appointed as both U.S. Pardon Attorney and Director of the DOJ’s Weaponization Working Group on May 14, 2025, following the withdrawal of his prior nomination for U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Law Enforcement Today reports that Martin’s dual appointments were accomplished through executive authority, bypassing the Senate confirmation process and allowing for a consolidation of pardon and investigative oversight powers. This approach was justified as necessary to address alleged abuses in politically charged cases.

Since Martin’s appointment, Reuters details that the Weaponization Working Group has intervened in at least seven high-profile prosecution and pardon cases. The group has reviewed and influenced efforts to dismiss or pardon individuals in politically sensitive prosecutions, including the near-dismissal of Glen Casada’s corruption case and the issuance of a pardon for Paul Walczak. These actions have raised questions regarding the group’s expanded role and the influence of executive authority over judicial proceedings.
