The recent capture of Boelter by law enforcement is being seen as a significant effort to enhance public trust in police. This development aligns with trends identified by Gallup, which has been tracking public perceptions of major U.S. institutions. After a decline in confidence following the murder of George Floyd, where trust in police dropped to 48% in 2020 and further decreased to 43% in 2023, there was an eight percentage point increase last year, bringing confidence up to 51%.

Jillian Snider, an adjunct lecturer at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a retired New York Police Department officer, emphasized the importance of trust in policing. “The connection between trust and successful policing is both practical and profound,” she said. Snider also noted that “In law enforcement, trust isn’t just a philosophical goal — it’s a tactical necessity.”
