In 2024, Bill Gates contributed $7.88 billion to the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, a charitable organization established by his former wife, Melinda French Gates. This donation was part of a larger philanthropic separation agreement between the two, reported to total $12.5 billion.
Gates also made additional contributions totaling at least $2.94 billion that year to other newly formed foundations linked to French Gates. These donations have increased the influence and resources available to French Gates as an independent philanthropist.
Melinda French Gates conducts her philanthropic activities through Pivotal, an umbrella organization she founded in 2015. The network includes Pivotal Ventures LLC, the Pivotal Initiatives Fund—a 501(c)(4) nonprofit—and at least five private foundations with 501(c)(3) status. The main foundation, Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, received its tax-exempt status in 2022 and saw its net assets rise from $532 million at the end of 2023 to nearly $6.9 billion after Bill Gates’ contribution in 2024.
By the end of 2024, this placed the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation among the largest private foundations in the United States by assets—surpassing organizations such as the Rockefeller Foundation and Walton Family Foundation.
French Gates is also associated with four other private foundations within the Pivotal network: The Pivotal Philanthropies Opportunity Foundation (also known as Greenfinch Foundation), The Pivotal Philanthropies Pathways Foundation (Snowfinch Foundation), The Pivotal Philanthropies Momentum Foundation (Rosefinch Foundation), and The Firefinch Foundation. All five share an address and leadership team: Melinda French Gates serves as director; John Sage is president/treasurer; Brooke Anderson is vice president/secretary.
In 2024, three of these foundations—the Opportunity, Pathways, and Momentum foundations—each received contributions of approximately $982 million from Bill Gates. Their combined net assets at year-end totaled about $9.78 billion.
Grantmaking by the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation in 2024 exceeded $484 million according to tax filings for that year. More than half of this amount ($257.5 million) went to National Philanthropic Trust for use in its Global Leaders Fund initiative, which supports international projects aimed at improving women’s health and wellbeing globally through grants distributed by selected individuals including Jacinda Arden and Leymah Gbowee.
Other significant grants included:
– $17 million to Blue Meridian Partners for public awareness on economic opportunities.
– $13 million to Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors ($10 million earmarked for reducing violence against women).
– Over $26.5 million supporting youth mental health initiatives via Amalgamated Charitable Foundation and New Venture Fund.
– About $24.2 million for civic engagement efforts during a presidential election year; major recipients included Hopewell Fund ($16.8 million) and Rutgers University Foundation.
– General support grants totaling $235 million over several years for organizations advancing women’s rights in the U.S., including groups like National Women’s Law Center ($12 million), National Partnership for Women and Families ($14 million), Reproductive Freedom for All ($5 million), Center for Reproductive Rights ($4 million), The 19th news outlet (over $4.2 million), States United Democracy Center ($7 million), Community Change ($5.5 million), Girls for Gender Equity ($2.5 million), Justice and Joy National Collaborative ($2.5 million).
Additional recipients include Ms. Foundation for Women, MomsRising Education Fund, Roosevelt Institute, National Domestic Workers Alliance, New America Foundation (each receiving around $4 million); Washington Center for Equitable Growth and Institute for Women’s Policy Research (each receiving about $2 million); RepresentWomen received $1.5 million.
The foundation’s focus remains on accelerating social progress for women and young people globally—a cause highlighted by Melinda French Gates’ commitment of up to $2 billion through these programs.
Pivotal’s funding strategy has drawn attention due both to its scale and its support of left-of-center advocacy groups such as New Venture Fund and Hopewell Fund—organizations previously managed by Arabella Advisors until its closure in 2023.
The establishment of multiple new private foundations under French Gates’ direction has raised questions about future grantmaking strategies; forthcoming tax filings are expected to provide more detail on their operations.
