Steve Cortes, president of the League of American Workers (LAW), said May 27 that Republicans should lead on education reform by embracing parental rights, child welfare, and Western Civilization values as bipartisan recognition grows regarding declining student outcomes.
“Obama’s political enforcer suddenly sounds sane! Rahm is not genuine, of course—but he’s sharp enough to recognize that we have an Education Crisis in our country,” Cortes said in an X post on May 27. “Will our side become the movement of Education now? Pro-parent, pro-child, pro-Western Civilization?”
Cortes’ post addressed a video from former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, in which he says that 50% of American children cannot read at grade level.
National Assessment of Educational Progress data show that only 32% of fourth graders and 30% of eighth graders read at or above the proficient level. Per-pupil spending averaged $16,526 across the U.S. in the fiscal year 2023, according to a report by the Education Data Initiative.
Cortes founded the League of American Workers in 2022 as a conservative advocacy organization focused on pro-worker policies. He previously served as senior adviser and national spokesman for President Trump during the 2016 and 2020 campaigns, according to LAW.
