Jessica Forgy, a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Texas’s 14th district, has pledged to support an amendment that would impose term limits on members of Congress. She is the first candidate in her race to make this commitment.

The pledge, provided by U.S. Term Limits (USTL), requires signers to promise that if elected, they will “cosponsor and vote for the U.S. Term Limits amendment of three (3) two-year House terms and two (2) six-year Senate terms and no longer limit.”

Philip Blumel, president of USTL, commented on Forgy’s decision: “Jessica’s strong support of term limits shows that there are individuals who are willing to put self-interest aside to follow the will of the people. America needs a Congress that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians.”

Currently, more than 150 members of Congress have signed similar pledges with USTL. The organization states that its mission is to advocate for congressional term limits in order to create a legislature more responsive to citizens’ needs.

Blumel added: “We have seen a dramatic increase in supporters wanting term limits on Congress. More than 87% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through congressional term limits.”

A recent Pew Research poll found bipartisan support for congressional term limits across the United States. According to Pew’s analysis: “An overwhelming majority of adults (87%) favor limiting the number of terms that members of Congress are allowed to serve. This includes a majority 56% who strongly favor this proposal, just 12% are opposed.”

Blumel concluded: “America is in trouble. Our career politicians have let the people down. It is time to return control of our nation to the people. It is time for a constitutional amendment limiting congressional terms.”

For such an amendment to take effect, it would need approval from two-thirds majorities in both chambers of Congress and ratification by 38 states.

U.S. Term Limits describes itself as a nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated solely to advocating for term limits at the federal level.
