Independent Women has issued a cease-and-desist letter to the Santa Fe New Mexican, accusing the publication of making false and damaging statements about the Independent Women’s Forum (IWF). The organization is demanding an immediate correction and cessation of what it claims are inaccurate communications that misrepresent its work in New Mexico.
The controversy stems from an article by the Santa Fe New Mexican, which previewed an event called “Her Game. Her Legacy.” The publication described the event as anti-transgender and labeled it a “transgender athletes in women’s sports event” and a “bus tour against trans athletes in women’s sports.” Additionally, the article allegedly characterized the event as political and partisan. According to Independent Women, these statements were made without factual basis or consideration for potential reputational damage.
The fallout from this reporting led to a breach of contract by the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market Institute, where the event was originally scheduled to take place. This forced Independent Women to secure a new venue at short notice.
Beth Parlato, senior legal advisor for Independent Women’s Law Center, criticized the article’s tone and content in her letter. She stated, “The article’s tone, selective quoting, and omission of critical context strongly prove that the piece was not written in pursuit of fair or balanced reporting. Instead, it was published with the specific intention of discrediting the event and maligning those involved.” Parlato further suggested that this conduct could imply actual malice or reckless disregard for truth under defamation law.
Independent Women warned that if their demands are not met by the Santa Fe New Mexican, they may pursue legal action.
