High school girls across the United States are facing difficult decisions regarding their participation in sports events. They must choose between competing against male athletes in girls-only events or stepping away from the sports they have dedicated themselves to for years. This situation is occurring with the knowledge and support of school and athletic officials.

During this season’s Oregon track and field state championships, a male athlete who had previously finished last in a boys’ competition two years ago participated in the girls’ high jump event, finishing fifth. Female athletes throughout Oregon are being compelled to share podiums with individuals who do not belong in their category.

Girls who express their disagreement face repercussions. Reese Eckard and Alexa Anderson, who placed fourth and third respectively in the state high-jump event, chose not to stand on the podium alongside the male competitor. Instead, they protested silently by standing respectfully in front of the podium. For their actions, they were publicly reprimanded by an official and instructed to move aside.
