Congressman Brett Guthrie and Congressman John Joyce have announced an hearing to examine the U.S. organ procurement and transplant system. The hearing, titled “Ensuring Patient Safety: Oversight of the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplant System,” aims to address concerns about patient safety, transparency, and management within the system.

“The Committee is continuing oversight of our nation’s organ procurement and transplant system. Shocking information obtained by the Committee has shone a spotlight on ongoing patient safety concerns, lack of transparency, and mismanagement occurring within this system,” said Chairman Guthrie and Chairman Joyce. They emphasized that the hearing will help understand how reforms can be instituted to improve the system.

The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at 10:15 AM ET in the Rayburn House Office Building. It was open to the public and press with a livestream available online.

Dr. John C. Magee, recently appointed as OPTN President and a transplant surgeon at the University of Michigan, testified before the Subcommittee on July 22, 2025. He highlighted OPTN’s mission focused on donor dignity, patient safety, and modernization efforts.

Dr. Magee acknowledged past failures but noted that over one million lives have been saved through collaboration among volunteers, healthcare professionals, and federal partners. He outlined priorities such as policy refinement for DCD guidelines and operational improvements.

He stressed ethical stewardship in policies related to donor dignity and patient safety while urging continued collaboration among stakeholders for modernization efforts.
