Steve Cortes, Founder of the League of American Workers, said that the nationalist sentiment behind the Mexico City riots reflects a broader trend but condemned the associated violence. The statement was made on X.
“Amazing. Mexico for Mexicans,” said Cortes. “Yes. I get it. Can’t accept the violence, of course, but the sentiment is profound and correct. Nationalism works, for Mexico and for America.”
According to Reuters, recent months have seen a surge in anti-foreigner demonstrations and nationalist sentiment in Mexico City. Local protesters have targeted U.S. and European migrants—especially digital nomads—whom they blame for rising rents, gentrification, and the erosion of Mexican culture in key neighborhoods.
As reported by Al Jazeera and Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography, at least a dozen protests against foreign residents have taken place in Mexico City since 2022. Activists primarily cite soaring housing costs, displacement, and fears of cultural loss as driving factors behind these demonstrations.
According to Pew Research Center, 61% of Mexicans express concern about the impact of foreign immigration and cultural change. In contrast, about 54% of people in the U.S. believe immigrants strengthen the country, highlighting greater anxiety about assimilation in Mexico than in the United States.
Cortes is also President of the League of American Workers and senior political advisor to CatholicVote. He is a former senior advisor to President Trump and JD Vance and has been a commentator for Fox News and CNN.
