In 2025, President Trump’s administration rolled back several U.S. appliance efficiency regulations, arguing that less restrictive rules would restore consumer choice and improve performance. According to The Washington Post, these policy changes affected standards for products like dishwashers and showerheads and sparked debate over their impact on energy savings and utility costs. Critics warned of higher bills and reduced efficiency as a result.
The Appliance Standards Awareness Project reports that recent Trump administration rollbacks could increase Americans’ utility costs by $43 billion over the next two decades. This is despite Department of Energy projections of $11 billion in direct consumer savings, reflecting a net negative impact for most households.
According to a survey cited by Finance & Commerce, consumer complaints about appliance performance have increased since efficiency standards were eased. Forty percent of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with cleaning effectiveness and cycle times, compared to significantly lower complaint rates before the regulatory changes.
