Steve Cortes, founder of the League of American Workers, has accused Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs of accepting foreign investment from China and supporting unvetted immigration through recent policy decisions. The statement was made on the social media platform X.

“Governor Hobbs welcomes dirty Chinese Communist money to Arizona,” said Cortes. “She also welcomes unvetted masses of illegal alien trespassers. See my prior doc on it, below.”

Arizona lawmakers have recently passed new legislation aimed at limiting foreign ownership of agricultural land and expanding state authority over immigration enforcement. According to The Arizona Republic, bipartisan support in 2024 pushed through bills restricting land purchases by foreign entities—especially from China—and granting local law enforcement greater powers to detain undocumented immigrants, signaling a tougher approach to both issues.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, foreign investors owned about 1.3 million acres of land in Arizona as of 2023, but Chinese entities accounted for less than 5,000 acres, or under 0.5% of all foreign-owned land in the state. This data highlights that Chinese ownership, while politically debated, remains a minor portion of foreign land holdings in Arizona.

Arizona remains a national leader in immigration enforcement, with more than 12,000 deportations carried out in fiscal year 2023 according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This marks an increase from 2022 and places Arizona among the top states for removals, though it still lags behind Texas and California in total numbers.
