The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is being urged to take immediate steps to protect human rights for those involved in the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, according to the Sport & Rights Alliance. The event is set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico in one year, amid rising concerns over human rights and civil freedoms.

Andrea Florence, executive director of the Sport & Rights Alliance, highlighted that “in 2018, the US, Mexico, and Canada provided clear human rights commitments in their bid documents to host the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup.” She added that despite FIFA’s claim that “football unites the world,” discriminatory policies could deepen social divides.

FIFA has acknowledged its responsibility to respect human rights through its statutes and Human Rights Policy. The Bidding Process Guide requires hosts to ensure no adverse impacts on internationally recognized human rights occur during the competition. This includes attention to labor rights, children’s rights, gender equality, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

The Sport & Rights Alliance has identified several areas where government policies pose risks. In particular, they noted issues under President Donald Trump’s administration concerning immigrants’ rights; freedom of press; LGBTI rights; safety for children; and protection from discrimination.

Minky Worden from Human Rights Watch stated that “FIFA should publicly acknowledge” these threats posed by US immigration policies. She emphasized using leverage with the US government to ensure respect for all qualified teams’ rights as they enter the country.

Human Rights Watch wrote to FIFA on May 5 urging action against discriminatory immigration policies. FIFA responded on June 3 indicating it expects host countries to allow eligible persons entry and is working with authorities on this matter.

Ronan Evain from Football Supporters Europe expressed concern about potential discrimination against fans based on political views or national origin. He stressed that FIFA must secure guarantees for safe travel and attendance at games.

Daniel Noroña from Amnesty International USA highlighted threats against freedom of expression related particularly towards Palestinian rights protests within America which have seen detentions or visa revocations among activists speaking out about their views.

Gurchaten Sandhu from ILGA World pointed out increasing legislative attacks against LGBTI individuals especially transgender people both within America as well as violence faced by them across Mexico affecting participation at public events like sports tournaments such as this upcoming one hosted jointly between three nations next year!

Antoine Bernard representing Reporters Without Borders called upon local authorities along with organizers themselves (i.e., FIFAs) implementing exceptional measures protecting journalists covering matches safely without arbitrary restrictions detention violence etcetera while ensuring smooth entry foreign press actively safeguarding all media workers attending large crowds excited spectators potential protests alike addressing systemic impunity allowing continued attacks upon reporters worldwide today!
