A federal court has ruled against the emergency justification used by former President Donald Trump to impose global tariffs. The ruling addresses the scope of presidential authority in trade matters.

Ryan Young, a senior economist at the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), commented on the outcome. “This decision reaffirms the separation of powers, which is the core principle of American government. The next step is the Supreme Court, which will hopefully also rule that presidents may not unilaterally enact hundreds of billions of dollars of tax increases whenever they want. Congress has the power of the purse, and the president does not.”

The case could proceed to the Supreme Court for further review.
