On behalf of Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata, Chief of Staff Leafaina Tavai welcomed Deborah Vaiotu, the 2025 winner of the Malofie Congressional Art Competition, to the U.S. Capitol. Deborah, a student from Tafuna High School and Malaeloa Village, visited for the opening of her artwork titled “Motherhood,” which will be on display for a year.

The competition in American Samoa was judged in March with over 25 entries from local students. Winners from congressional districts nationwide are invited annually to the Capitol to see their artwork on display and participate in various activities.

“Congratulations to Deborah for her beautiful and especially heartwarming artwork, which represents American Samoa so well,” said Congresswoman Amata. “Everyone exclaims over her lovely depiction of a strong Samoan mother with a baby.”

Amata also thanked all participants, acknowledging the high quality of entries as a testament to the students’ creativity and their art teachers’ guidance.

The winning artworks are displayed where they will be seen by thousands of Capitol tour groups each year. Members of Congress will frequently pass by these displays throughout the year.

“As I return to Washington, it will be wonderful to see all the new art in place showcasing originality and cultural influences from all over the country,” concluded Amata. She also expressed gratitude towards this year’s sponsors who made this opportunity possible for students.

Congresswoman Amata’s office collaborates with the American Samoa Department of Education to organize the competition, select standout pieces, and choose one representative piece for Washington. Public and private high schools in American Samoa are encouraged to submit entries.
