Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata welcomed on March 31 an official notice of a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to support HIV care at the LBJ Tropical Medical Center in American Samoa. The grant provides $16,800 for national training and technical assistance to the territory’s Department of Health.

The announcement highlights continued efforts to ensure essential health services are available for residents of American Samoa. The funding aims to support ongoing medical care and strengthen local healthcare capabilities.

“More important than the grant amount is the assurance that an essential health service is available as needed at our LBJ Tropical Medical Center,” said Congresswoman Amata. “Thank you to Faafouina Sagaga for the work securing this grant so these services are ready, and thank you to all our doctors and nurses for the medical services our people rely on throughout the year. Congratulations to Governor Pulaali’i, Lt. Governor Pulu, Health Director Dr. Saipale Fuimaono and our Department of Health.”

The Department of Health and Human Services is led by Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr., while these funds come through its Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA), headed by Administrator Thomas Engels.

This funding represents a step toward strengthening public health infrastructure in American Samoa, ensuring continued access to necessary treatment options.
