Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata released a statement on Mar. 8 honoring the life and service of Governor Lolo Letalu Matalasi Moliga.
The statement recognizes Governor Lolo’s contributions to American Samoa and expresses condolences to his family and the community. His leadership and faith are highlighted as central aspects of his legacy.
“I am saddened by the passing of Governor Lolo Letalu Matalasi Moliga. He was a strong and decisive leader. Even more importantly, he was a man of faith,” Amata said. She also reflected on their working relationship, stating, “I worked with Governor Lolo often in his eight years leading our territory, and I always had great respect for him, and for the will of our people who twice elected him Governor. He was an educator, a businessman, and a longtime dedicated leader among our people, including several key leadership roles before serving as Governor. He has a secure place in American Samoa’s history.”
Amata extended her sympathies to the governor’s widow Cynthia Moliga, their daughters, grandsons, friends, and all residents of American Samoa: “My deepest condolences to his dear widow Cynthia Moliga, their daughters, grandsons and the entire family and close friends, and to all the people of American Samoa. We mourn his passing, but remember his life, and we are comforted by our knowledge of his faith. May God bless and be near in this time, as he rests in honored peace.”
Governor Lolo served two terms as governor after being elected twice by the people of American Samoa. His career included work as an educator and businessman before holding several key leadership positions prior to becoming governor.
The congresswoman’s remarks reflect on both personal loss for those close to Governor Lolo as well as broader significance for American Samoa’s history.
