A bipartisan coalition has expressed concerns over proposed funding cuts to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the Library of Congress. The coalition addressed a letter to Chair Mullin and Ranking Member Heinrich, emphasizing the importance of maintaining robust congressional capacity.
The coalition appreciates the Subcommittee’s efforts in ensuring effective operation across the Legislative Branch despite constrained resources. They highlighted that security funding for Congress has seen significant growth over three decades, whereas other critical functions have not kept pace.
The House Appropriations Committee’s recent proposal suggests a $396.5 million reduction in GAO funding, nearly halving its budget. This move could hinder GAO’s ability to ensure efficient use of taxpayer funds and support congressional investigations. Additionally, a $84.6 million cut is proposed for the Library of Congress, affecting its mission fulfillment.
The coalition argues these reductions are unwise and urges increased investment in GAO and the Library to maintain legislative efficacy. They stress that further cuts would weaken Congress’s ability to legislate and serve effectively.
The letter calls for preserving GAO’s authorities and increasing total funding for necessary investments in security while maintaining essential legislative functions.
