Club for Growth PAC announced on Mar. 25 that its endorsed candidate, Rep. Barry Moore, leads the field in a new poll for Alabama’s U.S. Senate race, with Attorney General Steve Marshall and Jared Hudson trailing behind. The poll also found that only 31% of respondents were aware of former President Donald Trump’s endorsement of Moore.

The announcement is significant as it comes ahead of the primary elections scheduled for May 19, highlighting the influence of endorsements and campaign spending in the race. Club for Growth Action’s affiliated Alabama Freedom Fund has launched two new advertisements as part of a $1.25 million campaign across television, streaming services, and radio markets in Birmingham and Huntsville.

One advertisement promotes Trump’s endorsement of Moore: “Barry has never stopped fighting for Trump’s agenda. As Senator, he’ll fight even harder. Barry Moore (is) completely and totally MAGA with Trump’s complete and total endorsement,” according to the ad.

Another ad focuses on Marshall’s political background: “So after Steve Marshall spent most of his life as a soft-on-crime Democrat, why would we ever make him Senator?” According to details provided by Club for Growth PAC, Democrat Governor Don Siegelman appointed Marshall as Marshall County District Attorney in 2001; he later switched parties from Democrat to Republican in 2011 before being appointed state attorney general by Republican Governor Robert Bentley in 2017.

The Alabama Freedom Fund began running these ads on Wednesday to both highlight Trump’s support for Moore and remind voters about Marshall’s earlier affiliation with the Democratic Party.

Observers will be watching how these developments affect voter awareness leading up to Alabama’s May primary.
