On May 23, 2025, Yesim Sayin, Executive Director of the D.C. Policy Center, provided insights into the current state of the economy in an article published by Morningstar. The city, once considered immune to economic downturns, is now experiencing a slowdown attributed to significant job cuts at the federal level during the Trump administration.
“It is hard to see any bright spots when you look at the overall economic picture,” said Sayin. She elaborated that while the term “recession” might be appropriate due to a decline in regional GDP, it does not fully capture the situation as many residents still hold high-income positions.
Sayin pointed out that although there is no severe economic distress, there is a noticeable lack of vibrancy with numerous restaurants and businesses closing. The federal government’s role has been described as a “deadweight” on the local economy.
Despite these challenges, Sayin emphasized that there are no abrupt halts in economic activity; rather, it is characterized by gradual stagnation.
