Researchers from The Catholic University of America have played a key role in identifying previously undocumented graves at the Brent Family Cemetery in Aquia, Virginia. The findings were recently featured in The Washington Post.

The project is led by Dr. Laura Masur, an anthropology professor at Catholic University. Students from the university participated in the archaeological investigation following ground-penetrating radar surveys that indicated possible hidden features beneath the cemetery grounds. Additional fieldwork revealed evidence of dozens of unmarked burials dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries.

According to the university, this ongoing effort combines archaeological research with historical and genealogical studies to learn more about those who may be buried at the site. The team is documenting the cemetery and collaborating with local partners to help preserve it and recognize individuals associated with this early period of regional history.

“This work helps bring greater recognition to people connected to this early chapter of regional history,” said Dr. Masur.
