In a move addressing competition concerns in online app stores, Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) has introduced the App Store Freedom Act of 2025. This legislation aims to prohibit practices considered unfair or deceptive that restrict freedom of choice in the app store marketplace.

Jeffrey Westling, Director of Technology and Innovation Policy, along with Barbara Batycka, have provided insights into the bill’s implications. They noted that the act would reduce the control large app store providers have over commissions, in-app payment options, and communication methods. This change would grant users more freedom in their decision-making.

However, they also highlighted significant concerns regarding user security. The bill could lead to increased fraudulent activities by limiting firms’ pro-consumer behaviors often viewed as anticompetitive. As Congress continues to debate this and similar legislation, it is urged to consider all potential impacts on both app stores and their users.
